With the rapid increasing of power generation from renewable energy around the world, pump storage power station (PSP) plays a more important role in guaranteeing the stability of the electric grid. As the most widely used energy transfer unit for PSP, the Q11 - n11 characteristics of the reversible pump‐turbines at constant guide vane openings can be S‐shaped in turbine brake mode, which may cause stability issue with the starting process in turbine operation, where the turbine is difficult to synchronize due to the pulsations of head and flow. The most universal technique to improve the stability in the S‐shaped region is by using ‘misaligned guide vane’ (MGV). This method has been proven effective; however the flow mechanism of this method remains unclear.

Our research focuses on the mechanism of the influence of MGV on the S‐shaped characteristics of a high‐head Francis pump‐turbine, and analysis of instability of starting transient process of the unit.
