JHUniverse Technical Information
The JHUniverse web server (http://www.jhu.edu) is the main
web server for Johns Hopkins University and it's affiliated departments.
Server Capabilities
JHUniverse is a Linux server running Apache 2 web server software. JHUniverse hosts primarily static web pages, with support for CGI/PERL scripting
using CGIWrap. It also supports Server Side Includes. Other centralized web hosting options are available. Front Page may be used as an editor but Front Page Server Extensions are not supported.
Requesting an account
Departments, Recognized Student Groups, Affiliates, and Centers may request a site on JHUniverse. A Hopkins student, faculty, or staff member must serve as the official contact for the site. This contact should send their name, phone number, email address, and JHED LID to webhosting@jhu.edu . Personal web sites are not hosted on JHUniverse, but FESTER has recently added this feature.
Accessing your account
Access to your account is provided via FTP. More detailed information about connecting via FTP. More advanced users who are familiar with working in a Linux shell may request special access via SSH.
About your account
Once you login to your account, place the files that make up your website in your public_html directory. JHUniverse is not intended for general file storage, so files should not be kept outside the public_html directory. Your site will be accessible by at least two addresses, one using the "~" character and one without. If your account name is wwwdev, then your site would be visible using the address http://www.jhu.edu/~wwwdev and http://www.jhu.edu/wwwdev. Your home directory on the server would be /home/wwwdev and your web site files should be placed in /home/wwwdev/public_html . To have a page automatically answer when only your website address is specified, name your home page index.html. Example: http://www.jhu.edu/wwwdev/ is equivalent to http://www.jhu.edu/wwwdev/index.html .
Quotas
All new accounts begin with a 500MB quota. If you need to exceed this limit, special arrangements can be made. Contact webhosting@jhu.edu for more details.
Johns Hopkins Web Guidelines
Helpful information about setting up web sites in the Johns Hopkins environment is available from the Web Development Guidelines site. New users are especially encouraged to explore the guidelines.
