Fencing
has a long tradition at The Johns Hopkins University,
which is located in Baltimore, Maryland. The JHU Men's
Fencing Team was started in 1891, and women's fencing was added
in 1974 shortly after women were first admitted to the University.
Most of the fencers have no experience prior to joining the team and
quickly learn the sport in time to begin competing within several
months. Practices and home meets are held in the fencing room at the
Newton H. White Athletic Center and away meets are held at Division
I and III schools throughout the east coast and mid-atlantic region.
The team also participates in events sponsored by the University Athletic
Association and the National Intercollegate Women's Fencing Association.
In addition, individual team members often compete in events sponsored
by the United
States Fencing Association and fence at Salle Palasz, which is held weekly in the fencing room.
