Society of Women Engineers @ Johns Hopkins
SWE Goals
In the field of engineering, women still constitute only a minority of the population. It is not rare to be in an engineering class with fewer than a handful of females. The Society of Women Engineers strives to make women feel as though in a majority by bringing a sense of a community to campus life, both socially and academically. Through events and activities, SWE women work to help each other as well as foster engineering awareness in the surrounding neighborhood. The below list provides a brief overview of some of the things we have accomplished in the past. We hope that this list can grow with your help and enthusiasm!Fair Fun
Each year at Spring Fair, SWE sponsors a booth. This past year, we held a "toothpick and gumdrop" building contest for children under the age of 10. Children built creative structures solely out of toothpicks and gumdrops. The only problem we ran into was keeping the gumdrops from being eaten!Outward Outreach
We arrange for members to showoff their engineering knowledge and teaching skills at neighborhood schools. As guest lecturers, members usually choose to perform demonstrations to illustrate engineering principles to elementary and high school students.Speak Easy
What better way to gather information than from the horse's mouth. We may not have horses at our meetings but we do have guest speakers. Speakers can range from company representatives, alums, professors, and administrators. Usually open discussion, questions and comments are always welcomed. Also, if there's someone you'd like to see at our meetings, let us know and we'll try to arrange it.Conferences
Conferences are a great way to meet women in engineering from lots of other places. Make contacts with professional female engineers, professors, and engineering students at other schools. We try to provide funding when available for students who are interested in attending.
