THE PRINCESS BRIDE

July 9, 2010, Friday, just after sunset (8:30 pm)

The Princess Bride

"A beautiful young woman named Buttercup lives on a farm in the fictional country of Florin. When she orders the farmhand Westley to do chores for her, he answers "As you wish." Eventually she realizes he loves her and admits her love for him. Westley leaves to seek his fortune so they can marry, but his ship is attacked by the Dread Pirate Roberts.

Five years later, believing Westley is dead, Buttercup reluctantly agrees to marry Prince Humperdinck, heir to the throne of Florin. Before the wedding, she is kidnapped by three outlaws: a short Sicilian boss named Vizzini, a gigantic wrestler from Greenland named Fezzik, and a Spanish fencing master named Inigo Montoya, who seeks revenge against a man with six fingers on his right hand who killed his father. The outlaws are pursued by Prince Humperdinck with some soldiers, and also by a masked man in black. . ."

OPENING ACT: The Blue Lemon Trio

The Blue Lemon Trio (BLT), performing at Hopkins as the Blue Lemon Quartet was founded in 1999, the final year of the Clinton Presidency, and the year Robert Tate's hairline began to recede. Tate longed for a font of youthful vivacity to counteract his condition, and he found solace in the music of Jimi Hendrix, Count Basie and Cher. Those three influences combined in the cultural cauldron that was Clarke Coleman's basement into Robert's first project: Miguel and the Magical Potato Squad on Bikes/Ice.

The band's drummer was incarcerated and released from service. The result was an avant-pop band with no drummer, leaving Robert with no choice but to pretend the whole thing had happened on purpose, put on an oxford shirt, and start playing jazz.

Under the tutelage of the legendary Carl Grubbs, Robert, along with his bassist and keyboardist (C. W Bernard and Nicholas Van Sant), learned a dozen jazz standards, which they recycled liberally at social functions throughout Ruxton. Since that time they aveforgotten all but two of those standards: Fly me to the Moon and How High the Moon.

In its current iteration, the Blue Lemon Trio is less a musical phenomenon than a social one: a testament to lifelong bonds of artistic collaboration incubated on the gnarled streets of Ruxton. We urge you not to listen. Let us fade into the background as you gaze out on the verdant campus green.

Thank you for your years of loyal support. This tenth anniversary performance would not be possible were it not for the loyal commitment of our Baltimore fans.
