Top health related web sites for college students

  1. Sex and relationships but much, much, more. Has a searchable database of questions http://www.goaskalice.columbia.edu/
  2. Unbiased, accurate information about sexually transmitted infections (STIs) http://www.ashastd.org/
  3. The Harvard School of Public Health’s Food Pyramid. Good information on nutrition and eating healthy http://www.hsph.harvard.edu/nutritionsource/pyramids.html
  4. Good information on nutrition, exercise, high blood pressure, cardiovascular health www.americanheart.org
  5. Questions about eating disorders?? Think you or a friend may have an eating disorder? These web sites provide valuable information http://www.anred.com/ http://www.altrue.net/site/anadweb/
  6. For lots of information about a broad array of women’s health issues www.4collegewomen.org
  7. For information about complementary and alternative medicines (National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicines) http://nccam.nih.gov/health
  8. For information on dietary supplements (Office of Dietary Supplements) http://ods.od.nih.gov/index.aspx
  9. For general health information, including a section on men’s health. In contrast to all the other sites, this one is a “.com”. So look at the information carefully. Does it help that WebMD’s vice president is John (but not Johns) Hopkins?? http://www.webmd.com/
  10. For a global look at health issues, check out the World Health Organization’s website. It has lots of information relevant to the US but so much more. With globalization shrinking the world, the health of people in other countries is interconnected with our own. Just think about tuberculosis and Avian influenza. http://www.who.int/en/
  11. For gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and questioning students. Yes, it’s a medical organization but it has good information on a variety of health topics. http://www.glma.org/
