Laboratory
Services
Your
health care provider at the Health and Wellness Center may
order laboratory tests if clinically indicated.
Some
of these tests are "rapid " tests and can be performed during your appointment. The
results are usually available during your visit. These "rapid"
tests are
usually free of charge. These tests include:
-
rapid strep
test
-
urinalysis
-
urine
pregnancy test
-
monospot
test
-
fingerstick
glucose
-
fingerstick
hemoglobin
Other
laboratory tests can
also be performed (such as cholesterol tests, liver function tests,
complete blood counts, throat cultures, etc). These tests are usually sent to an outside commercial
laboratory for processing. We are able to collect the samples (i.e.
blood, urine, throat swab, etc) here at the Health and Wellness Center. These tests
are not free of charge and are usually billed to you or your insurance
company by the laboratory.
Your provider will make
arrangements with you to discuss your results when they are available.

Will
my health insurance cover these laboratory tests?
Coverage
varies depending on your insurance plan.
If
you need laboratory tests, it is your responsibility to check with your
health insurance carrier beforehand to find out if your health insurance
company will cover laboratory tests obtained at the Health and
Wellness Center. The Health and Wellness Center primarily uses
Citrano Laboratories for most lab tests and Quest Laboratories for
pap smear tests. Some health insurance plans, especially HMOs, require that
you obtain your laboratory tests from designated laboratories that are
located off-campus.
If
you do not check with your insurance company beforehand, you may
be unpleasantly surprised by a bill in the mail for laboratory
tests done here at the Health and Wellness Center.
Students
who have the Johns Hopkins University Health Insurance plan may obtain
their laboratory tests here at the Health and Wellness Center.
