The Student Health and Wellness Center is now offering the new Gardasil vaccine to prevent cervical cancer. It is indicated for the prevention of cervical cancer, cervical dysplasia, and genital warts caused by HPV types 6, 11, 16, 18. The vaccine is virtually 100% effective in preventing serious disease related to these 4 types of the genital wart virus. The vaccine is administered as a 3 dose series (1st dose, then 2nd dose two months later, then 3rd dose 6 months after the first dose). Before getting the vaccine, you should check with your insurance company to see if the cost of the vaccine is covered. At the present time, the Hopkins Student Health Insurance plan DOES NOT cover the cost of the vaccine. The cost of the vaccine is $145.00 per dose; you will be given a receipt indicating that you paid for the vaccination. You can submit this receipt to your insurance company but you should check first to see if it is covered.
