Most asked question: I've heard that Hopkins doesn't actually recycle, is that true?
NO! Hopkins does recycle! When you see staff picking up both garbage and recycling at the same time they are just transporting them together - recycling is bagged in clear bags and garbage is in black bags so they can be separated later. However, if someone pollutes a recycling bin with trash, such as a pizza box, then it cannot be recycled and in that case custodial staff must throw it away. Here is what you can recycle in campus/dorm recycling:
What does SEA stand for?
SEA stands for Students for Environmental Action, not to be confused with the Society for Engineering Alumni! SEA operates under and is funded by the Student Activities Council.
What are members required to do?
Nothing really. Just come to one of our meetings or give us your e-mail. Membership implies no obligations.
What kinds of events do you run?
That's largely up to you - if you think we need to act on something, let us know and we will walk you through the planning steps. We encourage anyone and everyone to organize an event at some time, but nobody is required to. Basic activities are Earth Week, stream clean-ups, parties, and weekly meetings, see our Events page for more.
I'm not a member. Can I run events with SEA?
Sure, bring it on. Just make sure you involve a fair number of SEA members (no, 2 is not a "fair" number) if you want to co-sponsor an event with us.
What are the perks of being in SEA?
You get to feel good about yourself and have a direct impact on sustainability at Hopkins! What could be better? Plus the occasional party, potluck dinner, or day trip off campus. Basically you get to do stuff and meet cool people :)
Still have a question?
If you have any further questions, please ask any of our core members or e-mail us at SEA@jhu.edu Communication is very important to us. If you have any questions or suggestions, please drop us a line.
