The unix host (sdssmth) displays windows on a terminal or computer running an X-Server (we normally use the Linux computer pt1). Observing is done through a Tcl/Tk point-and-click interface presented by the unix host.Commands to the telescope, filter/shutter controller, and CCD travel over the LAN to a terminal server in the dome where the RS-232A signals are distributed to the individual instruments.
Imaging data returned by the CCD travels on a fiber back to the real time data acquisition system in the APO main building. These data are stored on local disk and a minute or two later transferred to the unix host over the VME interconnect cable to appear as a FITS file to the observer.
