The extracellular matrix (ECM) modulates proliferation, apoptosis, and differentiation of cells during development and organogenesis via specific cell signaling mechanisms. These ECM-cell communications change during normal development, inflammation, bacterial and viral infections and wound healing. We are investigating these cell-ECM connections in two systems, the cornea of the eye and the intestine.
