BRAIN AND COGNITION: SUBCORTICAL CONTRIBUTIONS TO COGNITION Yantis/Stuphorn  Limit 30 (First meeting: 9/14) The primate neocortex has been a central focus of investigation into the neural substrates of complex perception, cognition, and action. Subcortical
structures have traditionally been thought to play merely supporting roles in behavior. Recently, however, investigators have highlighted the
often-overlooked role of subcortical structures in higher cognition. The recent literature concerning the functional roles of such subcortical structures as the basal ganglia, the locus ceruleus, and the cerebellum in cognitive functions including attention, cognitive control, decision, and motor control will be reviewed. Neuroanatomy and physiology as well as data from human neuroimaging and patient studies will be examined. Tutorial lectures by experts in these structures will be followed by several weeks of readings organized by key review articles and brief presentations of the primary literature by seminar participants.
