UNIVERSITY - WIDE COMMENCEMENT CEREMONY INSTRUCTIONS

A University-wide Commencement Ceremony will be held on the Homewood campus in Baltimore in front of Gilman Hall at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, May 27, 1999.  Those eligible to participate are all degree candidates from all the schools of Johns Hopkins University. Diplomas will be issued to those PhD candidates who have been formally approved by the respective Faculty Boards prior to Commencement. Degrees will be conferred to all candidates.


ESSENTIAL INFORMATION ABOUT COMMENCEMENT
 

DATE: THURSDAY, MAY 27

TIME: The ceremony will begin promptly at 9:30 a.m. Candidates must report by 8:45 a.m. as outlined below.

PLACE: The ceremony will take place on the Keyser Quadrangle in front of Gilman Hall

CAP AND GOWN: If you have reserved a cap and gown, please pick them up in room 10 of
    Gilman Hall (near the Book Center) at the following dates and times:

Students who have selected to "pick up" at the SCS Columbia Center, at the SCS Downtown Center, the JHU Montgomery Center or the JHU Washington Center at SAIS must do so on Saturday, May 22 from 10:00 -2:00 or on Monday, May 24 from 5:00-7:30 ONLY.

ACADEMIC PROCESSION
 
At 9:30 a.m. the groups of candidates will move in sequence from the buildings as guided by staff from the Homewood Registrar's Office. Candidates will then proceed to the seating area, down the center aisle, to the appropriate row.  Candidates will remain standing until after the Invocation.  Men will remove their caps before the Invocation and replace them when they rise for conferring of degrees.
 
CONFERRING OF DEGREES
 
During the ceremony the appropriate officers will present to the President of the University the candidates for degrees.  As each group is presented, that group will stand while the President confers the degree.  All doctoral candidates will proceed to the stage individually, according to degree, as their names are called, where all except Doctors of Medicine will be given their diplomas. (Doctors of Medicine will receive their diplomas at 2:30 p.m. at the Meyerhoff Symphony Hall, on Thursday, May 27, 1999.

(Medical institutions will follow instructions from your Book Store.) Peabody Institute will be sent instructions from their Office of Student Affairs.

SCS students may return items to the box located behind the stage area after the evening ceremony.
