Special Initiatives

The 95 Per-centers

Our ultimate goal is to enable the majority of ordinary young poeple -- who are mostly poor and living in urban neighborhoods, do not know their legal rights as citizens, and have not had the opportunities or the resources to think in positive and productive ways about solutions to their problems -- to emerge as a youth movement around their class-consciousness and economic needs.

The 95 Per-center Project aims to train these young people to be social activists and community organizers, develop their own systesm for running their organizations, define projects that appeal to their peers, organize events and participate in community meetings, and operate their own small businesses or non-profits to support their ideas that address self-chosen social problems facing their communities. Our hope is these young people will become assets, rather than liabilities, to their communities.

Hopkins4Playgrounds

We are building a playground in the Baltimore community. As a new initiative forged by student leaders at the Center for Social Concern, we are collecting resources and putting people in motion to discuss and change the urban built environment.

Learning Communities

The CSC houses several Learning Communities that are open to everyone in the Hopkins community. LC members work with community partners to plan panel discussions, off-campus outings, and direct service activities around 4 issue areas: Health, Tutoring and Mentoring, Social Justice, and the Arts. The SAB helps administer the LCs. For more information contact volunteer@jhu.edu.

Service Learning

The Student Advocacy Board has introduced the idea of service learning to the curriculum committees of both Krieger Arts and Sciences and Whiting Engineering schools at Johns Hopkins University. Come back for more information, including electronic copies of the presentations we made.

Baltimore Transition Connection

The Baltimore Transition Connection is located at Baltimore City Community College in the Inner Harbor, Coppin State College, and Johns Hopkins University. While enrolled in the Baltimore Transition Connection, students receive the support of a certified special educator and an experienced special education assistant. Areas of study include daily living skills, personal-social skills, and occupational guidance and preparation. Students practice everything from managing a checking account and purchasing food, to decision-making skills and resume writing. The CSC serves as one of the sites for the program.
