American Red Cross Blood Drives
at Johns Hopkins University

PLEASE GIVE BLOOD

The Greater Chesapeake and Potomac Region of the American Red Cross is urging all eligible donors to "Be the One We Count On" by scheduling a blood donation appointment this spring.

There is no substitute for human blood, and the need for blood does not take a vacation. It is the responsibility of the community to maintain a safe and adequate blood supply. It is only with your help that we are able to save lives each day. Thank you.

Find the nearest Hopkins drive and schedule an appointment .

To learn more about donating or check eligibility criteria, visit the Red Cross online. Click here, for tips on preparing for your next blood donation.

Who Runs the JHU Homewood Drives?

In addition to the paid Red Cross staff members who handle the blood collection, the administrative side of the drives is coordinated by Johns Hopkins employees. Student, staff and retirees also volunteer their time to publicize and staff the drives.

John Black, of the Human Resources Office of Faculty, Staff and Retiree Programs coordinates the Homewood drives and maintains this site. In addition:
  • Johns Hopkins University and Johns Hopkins Hospital collaborate to host blood drives at Hopkins offices at the former Eastern HS.

  • The Johns Hopkins Hospital hosts the drives in East Baltimore, Bayview and Mt. Washington.

  • The Peabody Institute hosts drives in the Unger Lounge (plaza level of the residence hall) and drives are also held at the Applied Physics Laboratory in Laurel.

Volunteer Help

The three JHU student groups listed below provide the bulk of volunteers to publicize and staff the Homewood campus blood drives; Hopkins ROTC sends volunteers and recruits donors; and JHU staff volunteer at the drive, along with retired staff. If you have been deferred from giving blood under current eligibility guidelines, your help as a volunteer is equally important.
  • Alpha Phi Omega student service co-ed fraternity publicizes the blood drives, pre-registers donors at tables throughout the campus, and recruits student volunteers to help run the drive.

  • Circle K Club recruits volunteers and donors for the Homewood Blood Drive.

  • The JHU Red Cross Corps publicizes and promotes the blood drive among the JHU student body and provides volunteers as needed for the drives.
