JHU Orientation

Orientation Schedule

Orientation has a lot of events waiting for you! The Orientation Staff puts together a week of fun and information to help you get out, meet your classmates, answer your Hopkins and Baltimore questions, and have a great time! You can see last year's schedule here , and below you can read descriptions of some of the major Orientation events. The official 2008 Orientation Schedule will be released in July.

Move-In

The time has come to move into your home for the next year! Over the course of two days, all the freshmen are moved into the AMRs, Wolman Hall, and McCoy Hall. The day you move in is determined by which building you live in. When you arrive at Hopkins, your car is greeted by one of our student volunteers. The new students are escorted to the AMR 1 Multi Purpose room while your parents stay with the car. Our army of volunteers unloads your car for you and professional movers make sure everything gets to your dorm room (that's right, you don't have to lift a finger!). Once your car is unloaded your parents can park in the visitor parking lot, attend the parent's reception, and meet up with you to set up your room. Watch sample Move-in videos here and here (courtesy of the Admissions department)

Parents Welcome Reception

Once your car is unloaded, your parents can attend the Parents Welcome Reception in the Glass Pavilion at Levering Hall. There will be lots of Hopkins faculty, staff, and students there to answer any questions they may have.

Parents Assembly and Interest Sessions

President Brody, the Deans, and the Orientation Staff welcome the parents to Hopkins with speeches and performances. The assembly is followed by breakout sessions that address common concerns and questions parents often have.

Convocation

President Brody and the Homewood Deans address the Class of 2012 in the official academic welcome to Johns Hopkins University.

Student Advisor Meetings

Every new student has been matched up with a student advisor who will be your guide here at Hopkins. At these meetings you get to meet your SA and all the other new students in your SA group, make friends and ask your SA questions about Hopkins, Baltimore, and anything else you can come up with.

Playfair

We don't want to ruin the surprise of Playfair, but try to imagine the entire freshman class in the Rec Center running around and having a great time. You don't want to miss this event because it always ends up being one of the most memorable experiences of Orientation!

Ethics Assembly

Hopkins is a community of learning that depends on trust and ethical behavior. This assembly outlines the ethics polices in place at Hopkins to ensure a high level of academic integrity.

Class Photo

Spell out "JHU '12" on the Upper Quad as our photographer takes your photo looking down from the Gilman bell tower.

Academic Interest Panels

These panels cover a variety of topics that are of interest to new students ranging from studying abroad to research opportunities to how to get an A.

Hopkins 24/7 Series

The Hopkins 24/7 series provides information about many of the services and opportunities available to students. Topics covered include service opportunities, the Digital Media Center, women's health and safety, sexuality, the Recreation Center, and more.

Sexcapades

Sex and alcohol are two things you will probably run into during your time at Hopkins. Come learn about sex and alcohol from your friendly Orientation staff. Afterwards you will be able to ask questions about alcohol and sex at Hopkins from members of Health and Wellness, the Dean of Student Life's office, and DSAGA.

Beach BBQ

The Beach (the nickname for the grass in front of the library) is a great place to hang out and relax in the late summer. We break out the grills and throw a BBQ on the Beach with all your favorite BBQ food.

Inner Harbor and Orioles Game

Jump on the buses that take you downtown and you'll find yourself exploring Baltimore's Inner Harbor. With great attractions and shopping galore, you'll have no problem finding something exciting to do! And what is one of the most exiciting things to do at the Inner Harbor? Of course it's catching a game at Camden Yards, home of the Baltimore Orioles. Make sure you buy your ticket from Orientation at the special discounted price we have! You don't want to miss out on enjoying a hotdog and hanging out with your friends as you watch your new hometown team.

Arts & Sciences and Engineering Open Houses

Ask questions, learn about research, talk to students and faculty, see presentation, enjoy refreshments, and take a tour. Use this opportunity to acquaint yourself with any and all departments that interest you.

Involved

Every year the Center for Social Concern brings the new students out into Baltimore to help them learn about and help the city we go to school in. Dress comfortably, prepare to get a little dirty, and wear closed toed shoes as you head out to help improve the community.

O-Show

Come see the student a cappella, comedy, and dance groups perform in Shriver Hall! These groups are showcasing their talents for you, and if one piques your interest, you might decide to audition for one of them. Either way, you'll enjoy the entertainment. Be sure to arrive early as seats for this popular event fill up quickly!

SAC Fair

There are a ton of student groups at Hopkins, and they are all going to be at the Student Activities Commission (SAC) Fair. You'll find groups for sports, performing arts, politics, and so much more, so stop by between classes, talk to members from the groups, and sign up.
