The Art of the Writing the Op Ed

Writing an opinion piece for the Baltimore Sun or other daily newspapers can be an effective way to inform, persuade or otherwise enlighten the public, but only if the piece is actually printed.

If you're interested in learning ways to improve your chances of getting published, follow this link www.jhu.edu:8080/ramgen/news_info/realmedia/oped.rm to watch a one-hour workshop with the past and present Opinion Commentary editors of The Sun, which was recorded on Tuesday June 6, 2000 at the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health.

More than sixty professors, researchers and affiliated staff attended this engaging and highly informative session. And a number of Op Eds have been written and printed since then as a direct result of the Op Ed workshop.

The speakers:

Hal Piper, who edited The Sun's opinion page for 11 years, is a former foreign correspondent for The Sun whose postings included the Moscow and London bureaus. He currently edits the Sun Journal feature in The Sun.

Richard Gross joined The Sun this spring to edit the Opinion Commentary page, after a long career as a reporter and editor for United Press International and other news organizations. He, too, was a foreign correspondent, covering the Middle East. Richard also covered the Pentagon for a number of years.

If you were unable to attend the seminar but are interested in writing Op Eds, please take time to watch this valuable presentation. The RealPlayer software plug-in is necessary to view this presentation. If you don't have one, you can obtain one for free at:
