Lincoln Grigsby       [ Poem 1 | Poem 2 ]

Lincoln Grigsby is a 42 year old non-verbal Autistic man who learned facilitated communication in 1992. Since then he has been writing poetry (about his autism in the first few years, which is when this first poem was written), and then in the last few years about his metaphysical understanding of what life is about. The second poem was written at the beginning of this phase. He has written well over l50 poems to date and writes that it is his most true expression. His first book of poetry was self-published two years ago and sold very well.

Autistic Man

CRACKED GLASS SENSES
SCRATCH INSIDE MY DAMN BRAIN
TRYING TO BREATHE SOMETHING FRESH
A CLEAR CLEAN SENSE
CLEAR OF SMASHED SENSE
SEEING FUNNY
HEARING FUNNY
FEELING FUNNY
DO NOT TOUCH ME
I AM NOT HERE
I AM NOT HEAR
I AM NOT SEE
I AM NOT FEEL
WHAT AM I
MY DAMN SENSES SCREAM
I AM HERE OR
MAYBE NOT
I FIGHT TO BE SOMEWHERE
ANYWHERE
SMASHHEAD BRAIN INTO STRAIGHT SENSE
WHAT IS STRAIGHT SENSE
AUTISTIC MAN.

by Lincoln E. Grigsby

IF I HAD SOMETHING TO SAY
WOULD I LISTEN TO MY OWN WORDS?
IF INSIGHT COMES INTO MY LIFE
WOULD I FOLLOW IT?
IF THE TRUTH IS CLEAR TO ME
WOULD I BELIEVE IT?
IF SOMEONE, OR SOMETHING, SHOWS ME THE
WAY
WOULD I FOLLOW?
IF NOT
WHY NOT?
