Graduate and Postdoc Positions Available in

Computational Materials Science Group

A postdoctoral research position and two graduate research assistant positions are available immediately in the computational materials science and engineering group at The Johns Hopkins University. We are looking for highly motivated individuals with background in physics, chemistry, materials science, or mechanical engineering, who are interested in further their scientific research endeavor.

Our group is active in several areas of materials science research. We are currently conducting research in

  • Large scale simulations of plasticity, fracture, and defects in non-crystalline materials,
  • Atomistic and continuum simulations of nano- and poly-crystalline materials,
  • Phase separation, spinodal decomposition, and pattern formation in multicomponent and heterogeneous systems, and
  • Glass transition.

The theme of our research is to provide critically needed information, either from microscopic or mesoscopic scale, to explain and predict properties and behaviors of materials. Experience with statistical physics, thermodynamics and kinetics, mechanical behaviors, phase transitions, computing languages (Fortran, C, C++, parallel computing, Unix programming, and Linux), and simulation methods such as molecular dynamics, Monte Carlo, Langevin dynamics, finite elements method, and electronic structure calculation, is definitely a plus (it is not necessary for graduate students; but a strong math and physics background is preferred.). Our group has a cluster of 6 DEC Alpha workstations, and is in the process of building a 64 multiprocessor DEC Alpha cluster with Gigaflop throughput per node. For more details about our research, please go to our Computational Materials Science Group website.
