The Department of Materials Science and Engineering has 15 faculty, about
40 graduate students, and about 25 undergraduate students, plus technical
and administrative support staff. Offices and laboraties are located in
Maryland Hall with additional laboratory space in Krieger Hall. The
undergraduate teaching laboratory and the department's surface anlytical
laboratory and electron microscope laboratory are all located in Maryland
Hall. The Department is one of nine departments in the G.W.C. Whiting School of Engineering
located on the Homewood campus at Johns Hopkins
University. There are about 3700 undergraduate and 2500 graduate students
at the Homewood Campus which is located in northwest Baltimore, with easy
access to nearby cities such as Washington DC, Philadelphia, and New York.
We pride ourselves in excellence both in research and teaching. Research
groups are relatively small, with between 5 and 10 graduate students and
post-doctoral associates, which allows for extensive interaction between
faculty and students. Participation of undergraduate students in research
is an integral part of our program. All of our classes are taught by
faculty members and the class sizes are relatively small; most class have
about 20 students.
Since materials science is inherently an interdisciplinary subject, many
research and teaching activities are conducted jointly with faculty in
other departments in the university.
You can find some more general information about our department in Peterson's Guide.
