UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMThe goal of the undergraduate program is to provide a rigorous and comprehensive curriculum in materials science and engineering as well as in mathematics, basic sciences, humanities, and social sciences. Our low student-to-faculty ratio allows students close contact with faculty in both classroom and research environments, as well as with other students and researchers in the department. In the tradition of Johns Hopkins, all of our undergraduate students participate in research, often beginning in their sophomore year, working closely with faculty and graduate students. DEGREE PROGRAMGRADUATE PROGRAMThe graduate program provides students with a broad yet thorough grounding in the fundamentals of materials science and engineering. After completing the core curriculum, students pursuing master's degrees take advanced courses that will allow them to work at the forefront of knowledge in their chosen specialty. Those desiring to conduct original research and advance the frontiers of knowledge pursue doctoral degrees. To this end, the department has an outstanding and wide-ranging research program, with particular emphasis on nanomaterials, thin films, metastable materials, biomaterials, computational materials science, and materials characterization.
