This Month in 1899 Hopkins physics professor Henry Rowland, the new president of the Physical Society of America, addressed that group, saying: "But the twentieth century is near--may we not hope for better things before its end? ... Let us go forward, then, with confidence in the dignity of our pursuit." The football team won the championship of the Intercollegiate Association of Maryland. Hopkins bested schools like Western Maryland College and Maryland Agricultural College but fell to heavyweights Swarthmore College and the University of Maryland.
Fifty new students began classes at the School of
Medicine, bringing the school's student body total to 214.
And landscaping around the newly built Physiological Building was
completed. The opening of the new building meant that medical
school instruction was finally united on the East Baltimore
campus--aspiring doctors no longer had to travel "across town"
for classes.
