Passionate Diversions

Shin Lin
Biophysicist, Arts & Sciences
Photos by Mark Lee

Born and raised in Hong Kong, Shin Lin learned martial arts from a famous kung fu master. He practices about 10 styles, from the meditative t'ai chi to fast Wing Chun, the style popularized by Bruce Lee. He also learned streetfighting at a downtown Baltimore gym, and incorporated the moves into Wing Chun.

Here, Lin is poised to begin making large rapid arcs with his double broad swords (known as "chasing the wind.") The fan and flute he holds below symbolize scholarship. Traditionally, the fan was razor-sharp, and the flute held poison. The ultimate Chinese hero was the warrior/scholar, something like Lin himself: "a nerdy professor who can really fight," he jokes.
