The perfect Baltimore backdrop
Jennifer Bishop, A&S '79, is a veteran photographer of
Baltimore neighborhoods, which made her a great choice for
shooting sociologist Stefanie DeLuca for
"Sooner or Later, You Have
to Get Out of the Car." The hours she and DeLuca
spent looking for the perfect backdrop were "truly
collaborative," Bishop says. "She and I are used to looking
at neighborhoods, but we see different things. I see images
and color and shape, and she sees the life inside the
walls." Bishop, a founding member of Baltimore's City
Paper when a student at Hopkins, now shoots for
People, Smithsonian, and Time magazines.
And long-lost traditions
Jim Paterson, SPSBE '04 (MS), got started on our cover
story, "In the Finest Tradition,"
because he wanted to know
about Hopkins' "old, scrungy traditions," he says. "I
thought it would be fascinating to know what they were and
where they came from." Faced with the general consensus
that the university doesn't actually have traditions, he
persisted — and turned up quite a few. Though some
are serious, most are light and fun, as is the article.
Which is good, he says, because "traditions are meant to be
a distraction from the heavy stuff of school." Paterson's
essays and illustrations have appeared in The Washington
Post, and he writes regularly for education
publications. —CP
