The Big Question
Digital or Film?
"Digital. I see a strong connection between painting and
the new world of digital photography. From the earliest
days, photographers strove to have this practice considered
an art as well as a science. In fact, the invention of
photography in England grew out of gentleman-scientist
Henry Fox Talbot's frustration at not being able to draw.
The early photographers used soft papers, gauze over
lenses, and even color to manipulate their images.
"I am profoundly influenced by pictorial photography. In my
work, I emphasize the painterly qualities inherent in that
tradition. With Photoshop, I am able to push and pull tones
to reflect the visceral feelings I experience in the
