Getting to Know Your Subjects
Down to the letters
What impressed Rich Shea about his experience reporting
"Fatherland" — about alumnus Rich Hollander's book,
Every Day Lasts a Year — was getting to know,
through their correspondence, three generations of a family
trapped in Krakow during Nazi occupation. "When you're done
and you realize they all perished, it's quite moving," he
says. "Beyond that, it's amazing how resilient this family
was. They carried on with life, and they had great hope."
Shea lives in Elkridge, Maryland, with his wife and two
kids. Currently a full-time freelancer, he formerly held
editorial positions at Teacher Magazine and New
Times Broward-Palm Beach.
Seriously...
Photographer Frank Klein got his start in Mostar,
Herzegovina, participating in a project to teach
photojournalism to young adults. He had gone initially to
Sarajevo to work in the schools; he left for Mostar in
1999, when the United States began bombing Serbia. So he
knows about capturing serious subjects, which made him
perfect for "Fatherland." One problem: "Rich [Hollander] is
real bubbly. He's always smiling, always happy. That made
it a little difficult," says Klein. "But I think I captured
his personality pretty well." Klein is a regular
contributor to Baltimore's City Paper and the
Baltimore and Washington Beacon newspapers.
