Katzenbach, Jon R. Teams at the Top: Unleashing the Potential of Both Teams and Individual Leaders. Harvard Business School Press, November 1997.

Katzenbach, Jon R. and Douglas K. Smith. The Wisdom of Teams. Boston: Harvard Business School Press, 1993.

The authors looked at a wide variety of teams in organizations ranging from the Girl Scouts to Desert Storm to extract lessons on understanding teams, becoming a team, and exploiting the potential of teams. Although not directly related to higher education, this is a very readable overview of the team concept.
