A: To continue the JHU tradition of excellence, Hopkins needs skilled
people to support its mission. Employment opportunities are available in
such areas as professional, technical, health care, research, laboratory,
office, administrative, secretarial, clerical and service or maintenance.
Q: How can I find out about current job opportunities on the Homewood
Campus?
A: Refer to Current Employment Opportunities
Q: Does the Homewood Campus also provide information about job openings
at the East Baltimore Campus?
A: Yes. Job postings from the School of Medicine, School of Hygiene,
Public Health & Nursing, Peabody, and the School of Advanced International
Studies (SAIS) in the Homewood
Office of Human Resources. The job lines for each campus
are listed below:
School of Medicine Job Line - 410-955-2115
Job opportunities for all campuses are listed in JHUniverse under
Employment
Opportunities.
Q: How do I apply for a position?
A: Qualified applicants (including current Hopkins Staff) must submit a
completed application and / or resume and cover letter indicating the
requisition number and job title to Homewood Human Resources, 119 Garland
Hall, 3400 North Charles Street, Baltimore, MD. 21218. Application
materials may be mailed, faxed (410-516-2314), or dropped off in
person. Applications received after the closing date, if one is listed,
may not be considered.
Q: Can I apply for more than one job at a time?
A: Yes, however it is best to submit a separate application/resume for
each job - with the appropriate job number indicated on the application
material.
Q: Can I E-Mail my resume to your office?
A: No. At this time, we are not equipped to handle application materials
sent via E-Mail.
Q: Can I bring an application for a position located at another Campus
to the Homewood Office?
A: Yes. We will send your application to the appropriate campus through
intercampus mail. In some instances this will take longer than if it is
mailed or dropped off.
Q: How will I know that my application material has been
received?
A: Each applicant will receive a post card acknowledging receipt of
application materials. Post cards are mailed out at the end
of each week.
Q: How will I know if I will be interviewed?
A: Individuals to be interviewed will be contacted by Human Resources
staff.
Q: How do I get to the Human Resources Office at Homewood?
A: Please refer to the section on Directions or call 410-516-8048 for
directions to the Homewood Campus.
Q: Where will I park?
A: Visitors to the Homewood Campus may park either in the visitor lot,
located just in front of the grass field outside of Garland Hall, or at
the parking meters surrounding the Garland field. The meters accept
quarters only - 15 minutes for one quarter.
Q: What will happen at the interview?
A: You will complete a formal application (if you have not already done
so), an authorization to check references, and if applicable, an
authorization to verify college degree. You may be asked to take typing
and spelling tests and may also be tested on various software packages.
The interview will be conducted by an Employment Specialist, who will
supply information about benefits, hiring procedures, JHU in general, and
ask questions related to previous work experience, education, and skills
related to the position. An interview with the departmental hiring
official may follow.
Q: When will I know the results of the interview?
A: This will depend upon how many people are being interviewed, the
schedules of the hiring officials, and various other factors. In most
cases, applicants who have been interviewed can expect to hear back from
the Employment Specialist within a week or two, it may take longer, but
notification will be made as soon as possible.
Q: What kind of benefits does Johns Hopkins provide to staff?
A: Refer to Benefits
Q: I already work at Johns Hopkins. How long do I have to stay in my
job before I can apply for another?
A: Staff members in positions that are non-exempt (pay grades 31-37) from
the Fair Labor Standards Act must have been in their present position for
a minimum of six months before they are eligible for self-initiated
transfer or promotion. Staff members in positions that are exempt from the
Fair Labor Standards Act (pay grades 38-97) must have been in their
present position for a minimum of 12 months before they are eligible for
self-initiated transfer or promotion. For more information refer to the JHU Personnel Policy
Manual.
Q: Do Johns Hopkins employees follow the same procedures as non-JHU
staff to apply for an open position?
A: Generally yes. An employment application should be completed, but it
will not be necessary to list ALL previous employment, since the original
application will contain that information. The application must include
the position currently held. A cover letter is a good way to let the
Employment Specialist and the hiring official know how your current job
and the experience and skills you have gained relate to the job for which
you are applying.
Q: I've checked the posting boards and the Job Line, but I don't see
anything right now that interests me. Can I just send my resume to your
office?
A: We do accept and review unsolicited resumes, however, it is best to
wait for a position that is of interest to you, and for which you are
qualified, and apply for that specific position. You then have the
opportunity in your cover letter to address the particulars of the
position and how your experience and skills match the requirements.
Q: I am a hiring official on the Homewood Campus. How do I hire staff
for my department?
A: Refer to the Supervisor's Guide to Employment, section 3 of the Personnel Policy
Manual or call your employment specialist or Human Resources Manager.
Homewood Campus - 410-516-8140
The Job Line may be accessed 24 hours a day, seven days per week and is

Because each department and each job is unique, certain aspects of the
orientation must be conducted at the department level. Departmental
orientation is an on-going process, with activities occurring before the
staff member's first day of employment and continuing throughout the first
year. Please refer to the Supervisor's Guide for Orientation of New Staff
for additional information.
Therefore, we involve ourselves not only in many health and research
programs but in seeking qualified candidates. We reach out to various
state and local governments, educational institutions, community groups,

willingness to assist in placing qualified candidates. We communicate
with various community and campus groups in addition to faxing job vacancy
information to approximately 30 locations.
