ADOPT-A-FAMILY / ADOPT-AN-AGENCY PROGRAM

In the rush of the holidays, it can be difficult to find time to remember families less fortunate than your own. By participating in the Adopt-a-Family / Adopt-an-Agency Program, you can help provide families and individuals with gifts, clothing and food that they might otherwise not receive or be able to afford. We offer several local nonprofit health and human welfare agencies for adoption, including shelters for women and children who have been abused, shelters for people who are homeless, foster care facilities, and residences for people with severe disabilities. If you adopt an agency, you may be given information on specific individuals or families served by that agency who need to be adopted, or you may be asked to provide more general items.

Details on the specific needs of families and agencies are available each fall for faculty, staff, students, or departments who are interested in participating in the program for the holidays. Those interested in helping are encouraged to complete an ON-LINE request to adopt a family or agency in 2007. Or, if you would like more information, email the program's coordinator, Sondra Ponzi , in the Office of Faculty, Staff and Retiree Programs or call 410-516-0338.

This program is sponsored by the Johns Hopkins University and is a charitable activity for faculty, staff, students and retirees of this institution. If you are not affiliated with Johns Hopkins, please contact your local Social Services agency for information on how you can help families in your area.

2006 Adoption Report

During the 2006 holiday season, Johns Hopkins staff, faculty and retirees stepped forward to adopt 40 families, 18 agencies, 65 adults with mental disabilities living at The Chimes and an additional 200 children and adults spending the holidays in temporary shelters and permanent housing programs operated by Project PLASE (People Lacking Ample Shelter and Employment).  Adopters provided wrapped gifts including clothing, toys and food, usually delivering the gifts personally to the family.  Adopted families were identified by Family and Children's Services, Furman Templeton Elementary School and Project PLASE.
