Tips on Coping with Traumatic Events

Don't

Do

Drink alcohol excessively

Expect the incident to bother you

Use legal or illegal substance to numb post-trauma effects

Maintain good diet and exercise

Withdraw from co-workers, friends or family

Take time for leisure activities

Look for easy answers or assign blame to explain the incident

Remind yourself that post-trauma reactions are normal

Think you are ‘crazy’

Spend time with friends, family and co-workers

Have unrealistic expectations for recovery

Get extra help if needed
