HopSFA Hymnal
What's the Hymnal you ask?
The HopSFA Hymnal is a book of filksongs (parodies of common songs, with lyrics giving reference to science fiction, fantasy, and related subjects) produced and sold by HopSFA in the late 1970s. The book contains over 300 well-indexed pages of filk, with hundreds of different authors and a multitude of subjects, including computers of the 1970s, Star Wars (which had just come out in theaters), and the comparison of Hopkins to rival schools.
A true find, not many copies of it exist today. If you do own a copy, you will notice white stickers covering some of the songs; this is because the books were produced without taking heed to all copyright issues, and the songs were covered up to prevent legal action taken against the club. We have a xeroxed copy of the 4th edition, and we plan to make more copies from in the future for distribution and then sing at lacrosse/varsity games.
(Hey, it would actually make the games interesting!)
If you are interested in our plans for the HopSFA Hymnal, or if you do (or did) actually own a copy yourself, please feel free to e-mail us at hopsfa@jhu.edu . Also, if you wish to nominate a song for inclusion in the hymnal, email us!
