NOTICE of CONSTRUCTION
HOMEWOOD APARTMENTS
The offices currently occupying the second floor of the Homewood Apartment building will be moving out in June 2010 and the University Counseling Center and Student Health and Wellness Center will be moving in with a planned opening of September 2011.
Beginning in June and throughout the 2010-11 academic year renovations will be occurring to ready the space for these offices. Listed below is the information currently available regarding the work that will occur. Please consider this as you choose space in the Homewood. You can assume that apartments on the third floor will hear the most noise, but don’t assume that the upper floors will be noise free. Here’s what we know:
- The current occupants are scheduled to vacate the building in mid-June and Facilities Management anticipates beginning demolition thereafter. They hope to have the bulk of the demolition completed over the summer.
- The demolition could include gutting the entire second floor (excluding the annex) of all walls and finishes. On a limited basis, they may need access to adjacent floors to trace utility lines as needed. If access is required, design and construction staff will be escorted by a member of the Housing , Housing Facilities or Residential Life staff.
- Construction will not start before 9 am, in consideration of student schedules, and should be complete by approximately 6 pm. Facilities Management has communicated a willingness consider student needs during exam times and to make scheduling adjustments to the extent possible.
- The noise levels will vary from time to time. The first few weeks of demolition will be noisy; however, there will be noise intermittent throughout the entire project.
- Throughout the construction phase the contractors will require some utility shutdowns, but they have promised to give plenty of advance notice so residents can prepare. Generally they will be for the work day or fragments of the day, not throughout the night.
- The exercise room on the second floor will no longer be available once construction begins. At this point the plan is to move the exercise room to the first floor. We (Housing Office) will keep you posted as these plans develop.
The Homewood Apartments are wonderful large apartments that students find to be extremely comfortable. If you are not terribly sensitive to noise, have a schedule that keeps you out of your room for the major portion of the day and think you would enjoy apartment living, we hope you will choose the Homewood. We will keep you informed as information becomes available to us…
