Where do grad students live?
Grad students live in a number of places around Baltimore, but are most commonly found in Charles Village, Hampden, Roland Park, and Mount Vernon. If you're worried about safety, you may want to check out the campus safety reports at http://www.jhu.edu/~security/.
What's a reasonable rent?
As you might expect, reasonable rent prices vary by neighborhood and street. However, a good guideline to follow is that a comfortable (safe and homey) one-bedroom apartment will cost approximately $650-$700. If you share a row-house with other students, expect to pay $400 per month in rent. As always, utilities such as electricity and phone are extra.
When do I need to secure an apartment?
To be safe, it's best to start your housing search in the early summer. Most people try to have accommodations finalized by mid-July, but earlier is better. In early summer, you might start by finding a neighborhood you'd like to live in. By mid-July, you should have narrowed your search down to two or three possible apartments, and be ready to sign a lease.
Getting to campus
If you're looking for cheap airfare or last-minute travel deals, a good place to start is with many of the resources compiled online at the GRO Endowment Travel Store. If you need transportation from the airport, train station, or bus station, some general information is available online. However, JHU is organizing an airport shuttle for students arriving on August 30 or 31. The cost is $10, and probably the simplest way to get here. More information will be added about this when we receive it.
If you're just looking for driving directions, you can find them online here.
