Welcome Wagon
The GRO has asked current grad students to volunteer to help you out during the summer before you move to Baltimore. If you would like to be given a contact person to ask questions of, please let us know at gro (at) jhu (dot) edu. Your contact can advise you about neighborhoods, social life, cost of living, and more.Travel Plans
When arranging your move to Baltimore, or even just a weekend trip away from town, check out the online travel resources that we've compiled at the GRO Endowment Shopping Mall. You'll find amazing deals, last minute discounts, unusual routes, and more. Every purchase you make by linking from this website provides a few cents to your favorite charitable cause--graduate students! What do I need to do before I get to campus?
Before registering for classes, you need to have done the following:- Fill out the Immunization form sent to you by the Student Health and Wellness Center
- Fill out the application for JHU Student Health Insurance on-line at Chickering's website. If you have any questions, contact the Student Health & Wellness Center at 410-516-8270
- Find out if your department will cover the one-time $500 matriculation fee. If not, be prepared to pay it at the time of registration.
Financial Matters and Tax Write-offs
When you move to Baltimore, save your moving receipts. You can deduct the cost of your move (boxes, airfare, truck rental, u-haul, etc.) from your stipend when reporting on your federal and state tax forms.Grad school is not exactly a lucrative time in a person's life. Luckily, we're all in the same boat. The GRO is working to establish a permanent funding source for graduate students, and you can help (for free!)
