Johns Hopkins will unveil a newly minted Live Near Your Work
Program next week that will
feature significantly increased home-buying grants and an
expanded neighborhood range.
The changes will be announced at the Live Near Your
Work Home Ownership Expo, to be held
from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sept. 29 at The Johns Hopkins
Hospital's Turner Concourse.
The program, launched in 1997, is designed to
stimulate home ownership in targeted
revitalization areas by providing a cash grant to eligible
Johns Hopkins employees. To date, more than
300 employees have purchased homes in the targeted
communities, located near the Homewood
campus and in East Baltimore.
The event will feature presentations from senior Johns
Hopkins officials and representatives of
the Office of WorkLife and Engagement, which runs the
program. Participants can meet with home-
buying experts and learn how to quality for LNYW grants.
The event's organizers will also raffle off prizes
— including an iPod Touch, a 27-speed bicycle
and gift certificates to area merchants — between 1
and 2 p.m. (must be present to win).
Michelle Carlstrom, director of the
Office of WorkLife and Engagement, said that the
enhanced program should greatly impact homeownership
options for Johns Hopkins employees and the
areas surrounding the university's Baltimore campuses.
"We're very excited about the upcoming expo and our
official re-launch of this program," she
said. "Our focus in rebuilding Live Near Your Work was to
create a program that would responsibly
serve and benefit three groups: Johns Hopkins people, the
institution at large and Baltimore City
neighborhoods. I think we're off to a good start."
