By Amy Lunday Homewood
Enrollment at a glance, as of July 25: The 1,238
students in the Class of 2012 come from an applicant pool
of 16,011, 4,056 of whom were admitted (422 early
decision). The class is 53 percent male and 47
female; 198 students are underrepresented minorities. The
class's median SAT I combined score is
1410 and its median high school class unweighted GPA, 3.77.
Sixty-five percent are enrolled in Arts
and Sciences and 35 percent in Engineering.
Shifts in majors: Compared to 10 years ago, the
applicant pool had three times the number of
students planning to major in Near Eastern studies, applied
mathematics and statistics, public health
studies, biomedical engineering, East Asian studies,
sociology, cognitive science and history of art.
Biology is still the most common major interest but is
growing at a slower rate than the applicant pool
as a whole.
Geographic expansion: Comparing the enrolling class
to that from a decade ago, Johns Hopkins has
seen a big upswing in students from California; the
Southeast Coast states of Florida, Georgia, South
Carolina and North Carolina; and students from abroad. The
number of Californians in this class is 87
percent higher than in 1998; from the Southeast Coast, 40
percent higher; and from outside the
United States, 39 percent higher.
This year's students hail from 45 states plus Puerto Rico,
the District of Columbia and the Virgin
Islands. The top five states in order are New York,
Maryland, New Jersey, California and Pennsylvania.
The 103 international students come from 29 countries, the
farthest away being Singapore.
