Bayview Medical Center

Renee Blanding, an assistant professor in the Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine, has been named medical director of the operating room.

William Greenough III, professor of medicine in the Division of Geriatric Medicine and Gerontology, has been named to the inaugural class of ambassadors in the Paul G. Rogers Society for Global Health Research. He is among 27 scientists selected by the society, named for a former congressman from Florida, to provide leadership in its mission to increase American support for global health research.

David Hellmann, vice dean and director of the Department of Medicine, has been named Distinguished Teacher of the Year by the American College of Physicians. The award, which will be given at the organization's national meeting in San Diego in April, recognizes Hellmann's teaching accomplishments at Hopkins and elsewhere.

 

Bloomberg School of Public Health

Chris Beyrer has been promoted to professor, with tenure, in the Department of Epidemiology.

M. Chris Gibbons, an assistant professor in the Department of Health, Behavior and Society and associate director of the Johns Hopkins Urban Health Institute, is president-elect of the International Society for Urban Health. The 150-member organization studies the health effects of urban environments and urbanization.

James D. Yager Jr. has been appointed as the second holder of the Edyth Schoenrich Professorship in Preventive Medicine.

 

Johns Hopkins Medicine

Timothy Connolly, former director of security at Johns Hopkins Bayview, has been named senior director of corporate security for Johns Hopkins Medicine. William McLean has returned to his position as director of the affiliates for corporate security. He was formerly director of security for JHH and the East Baltimore campus.

 

Krieger School of Arts and Sciences

DeAnn Baxter, a master's degree candidate in the Communication in Contemporary Society program, has been named the first New Professional of the Year by the Public Relations Society of America New Professionals Affinity Group. Baxter is a public relations specialist in Alexandria, Va., for the Pittsburgh-based firm Michael Baker Jr. In 2007, she will start a one-year term as a director of the National Capital chapter of the PRSA, which is the world's largest organization for public relations professionals.

 

School of Medicine

Dana Kimball Anderson has been promoted to professor in the Department of Surgery, full time.

Paul Auwaerter, associate professor of medicine, has been appointed clinical director of the Division of Infectious Diseases.

David M. Bluemke has been promoted to full professor of radiology in the Russell H. Morgan Department of Radiology and Radiological Science.

Dana Boatman has been promoted to professor in the Department of Neurology, full time.

Hunter Champion, assistant professor of medicine, has been selected as the American College of Cardiology's inaugural Douglas P. Zipes Distinguished Young Scientist awardee. Champion was recognized for making contributions in cardiovascular medicine and for amassing a large body of scientific research.

Barbara J. de Lateur has been appointed professor emerita and named the Lawrence Cardinal Shehan Professor Emerita in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.

James P. Dunn has been appointed as the first holder of the newly created Eugene de Juan Professorship in Ophthalmic Education.

Anthony Etzel, administrator of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, is president-elect of the Association of Otolaryngology Administrators, a sister society of the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery.

Mary Glenn Fowler has been appointed professor of pathology, full time, in the Department of Pathology.

Joel E. Gallant has been promoted to professor in the Department of Medicine, full time.

Richard George, a Reynolds Foundation postdoctoral fellow in cardiology research, has received the Melvin Judkins Young Clinical Investigator Award in Cardiovascular Radiology from the American Heart Association. The award recognizes George's leadership of a Johns Hopkins research team that used the latest imaging software and machinery to develop a means of tracking blood flow slowed by narrowing of the coronary arteries.

Rebecca Z. German has been promoted to professor in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, full time.

W. Richard Greene has been appointed professor emeritus in the Department of Ophthalmology.

Anthony N. Kalloo has been promoted to professor in the Department of Medicine, full time.

Hugo Moser, University Professor of Neurology and Pediatrics and director of the Neurogenetics Research Center at the Kennedy Krieger Institute, has been elected a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the world's largest scientific society and publisher of the journal Science. As previously announced, three other JHU faculty members were elected fellows this year. They were Michael Aaron Edidin, School of Arts and Sciences; Kenrad E. Nelson, School of Public Health; and Bert Vogelstein, School of Medicine.

Maria Oliva-Hemker has been appointed as first holder of the Stermer Family Professorship in Pediatric Inflammatory Bowel Disease in the Department of Pediatrics.

Leslie P. Plotnick has been appointed to the Professorship in Clinical Care and Research of Pediatric Endocrinology in the Department of Pediatrics.

Sally Radovick has been appointed to the Lawson Wilkins Professorship in Pediatric Endocrinology in the Department of Pediatrics.

George Ricaurte has been promoted to professor in the Department of Neurology, full time.

Peter C. Rowe has been appointed as first holder of the newly established Sunshine Natural Wellbeing Foundation Professorship in Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Related Disorders in the Department of Pediatrics.

Peter Schilder has been appointed assistant professor emeritus in the Department of Neurology.

Gary S. Wand has been appointed as the first holder of the Alfredo Riviere and Norma Rodriguez de Riviere Professorship in Endocrinology and Metabolism in the Department of Medicine.

Frank R. Witter has been promoted to professor in the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics, full time.

John H. Yardley, professor of pathology, has been named University Distinguished Service Professor of Pathology.

 

School of Nursing

Fannie Gaston-Johansson, a professor in the Doctoral Program, was honored Nov. 22 and 23 by Gothenburg University in Sweden in recognition of her long and distinguished relationship with the university. Sahlgenska Academy at Gothenburg University celebrated her accomplishments with a dinner, a reception for all faculty and Symptoms In Focus, a symposium honoring her professional accomplishments.

Johns Hopkins Nursing Magazine was named a Platinum Winner in the 2006 MarCom Creative Awards, in the category of Educational Institution Magazine. The awards are given by the Association of Marketing & Communication Professionals.

 

University Administration

Holly Benz, assistant director of Research Projects Administration, has completed the Leadership Development Institute sponsored by the National Council of University Research Administrators.

 

Whiting School of Engineering

William Ball, professor in the Department of Geography and Environmental Engineering, and his former doctoral student Thanh Helen Nguyen were awarded the 2006 Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation Award by the Association of Environmental Engineering and Science Professors for "Exploring the Role of Surface Characteristics in Determining Sorption Properties of Chars and Soots."

Ralph Etienne-Cummings, associate professor in Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Pablo Iglesias, a professor in Electrical and Computer Engineering, were named Science Spectrum Trailblazers by Science Spectrum magazine. Trailblazers are "outstanding Hispanic, Asian-America, Native American and black professionals in the science arena whose leadership and innovative thinking on the job and in the community extend throughout and beyond their industry."

Dennis Nagle, a research engineer at the WSE Center for Multi-Function Applique, was one of eight researchers who received this year's R.W. Hart Prize for Best Developmental Research Project at the Applied Physics Laboratory, for their innovative work on the FY2005 IR&D, High Temperature Structures and Thermal Management Systems.

The Whiting School was invited to join the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory's Engineering Relations with Academia Program. WSE was selected by LLNL from many institutions that collaborate with the laboratory's Engineering Directorate and is the first non-California-based institution to be invited.
