Homewood's San Martin Center will take a big step
toward completion next month when construction begins on
the pedestrian bridge that will provide employees and
guests with easy access from a new five-level, 523-space
parking garage to campus grounds across the street.
The bridge will span San Martin Drive northwest of
Nichols House and will connect to an elevated,
ADA-compliant walkway linking to a new brick sidewalk on
the west side of the Johns Hopkins Club.
In order to complete the project, and for safety
reasons, a portion of San Martin Drive will be closed for
approximately four to six weeks, starting around Oct.
20.
The southern end of the road will be closed at the
intersection of San Martin and Wyman Park drives, with
signs directing traffic down Wyman Park Drive and north on
Remington Avenue to Keswick Road. Visitors to Olin Hall,
and JHU maintenance and construction vehicles serving Olin
Hall and the bridge construction, will be allowed through
the detour.
The northern end of San Martin Drive will be closed at
West University Parkway except for local traffic. Through
traffic heading south will be directed to West University
Parkway, Charles Street and Art Museum Drive.
The main element of the San Martin Center will be a
three-story, 79,000-square-foot structure that will serve
as the new home for the Carnegie Institution of
Washington's Department of Embryology, whose scientists
hold joint appointments in the Johns Hopkins Department of
Biology. Its offices are currently located at 115 W.
University Parkway. The new facility, with state-of-the-art
laboratories, is to be called the Maxine F. Singer
Building.
Constructed on top of the five-level parking garage
will be a two-level, 46,000-square-foot office building
that will house a Johns Hopkins tenant, not yet
identified.
The San Martin Center is expected to open in March
2005.
