Student Employee of the Year -- Each year the efforts of undergraduate and graduate student workers are acknowledged through the JHU Student Employee of the Year Award presented in April during National Student Employment Week. JHMI International Society Events -- The JHMI International Society presents "First Tuesdays," a monthly potluck luncheon for spouses and children of JHU and JHMI international students, faculty and staff. Community Forums -- The Johns Hopkins Urban Health Institute and HEBCAC are sponsoring two workshops.

On Feb. 6, "To Be Or Not To Be a 501 (c)(3)," will cover the advantages and disadvantages of becoming a nonprofit corporation, defining community need and fund-raising potential, necessary steps for incorporation and tax exemption, and new laws affecting nonprofits. The workshop also will benefit nonprofit organizations that already have 501 (c)(3) certification.

" Corporate and Foundation Grant Writing," on Feb. 25, is for both beginners and those who want to review the fundamentals of seeking grants. This class will cover preparing applications, types of grants, the basics of public and private sector research and grant seeking.

Spinal Cord Injury Research -- The Maryland Board of Spinal Cord Injury Research announces the availability of funds for grants aimed at restoring neurological function in individuals with spinal cord injuries for FY 2004. Research facilities in Maryland are eligible.

The RFP is available on the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene's Web site www.fha.state.md.us/oipha/html/spinal.html or through the Office of Injury Prevention and Health Assessment.

Proposals from established investigators, researchers new to the field, junior researchers and those in disciplines that have not traditionally focused on spinal cord injury are welcome. Independent investigators and ethnic minorities are encouraged to apply as P.I.'s. There are no restrictions on citizenship. Each recipient is eligible for up to $300,000 of direct and indirect costs for up to three years. The maximum award is $150,000 per fiscal year. The deadline for applications is June 1.
