President William R. Brody announced on Feb.16 that Stephen Szabo (pictured at right), associate dean for academic affairs and professor of European studies at SAIS, would assume the position of interim dean of that division, effectively immediately.
President Bush on Feb. 15 formally nominated Dean Paul Wolfowitz as deputy secretary of defense. To expedite the transition at SAIS, Brody accepted Wolfowitz's offer to take a leave of absence while his confirmation was pending.
The Senate Armed Services Committee has scheduled Wolfowitz's confirmation hearings for Tuesday, Feb. 27, at 9:30 a.m. Confirmation is expected.
Szabo's areas of expertise are Western Europe and Atlantic relations, Germany and NATO. He received his doctorate in political science from Georgetown University and has been a professor at the National War College; a faculty member at the Foreign Service Institute, Georgetown and the University of Virginia; and a fellow with the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars. He joined SAIS in 1990. His current research focuses on German politics, foreign and defense policy and U.S.-European relations.
"I am delighted to announce that Dr. Stephen F. Szabo, who has long and ably served the school as associate dean for academic affairs, will assume the position of interim dean," said Brody in a letter to SAIS faculty, staff and students. "I have every confidence that Dean Szabo will do a fine job of managing the school as we pursue the search for Dean Wolfowitz's permanent successor."
To begin the search, a committee chaired by Provost Steven Knapp has been formed.
SAIS faculty members on the committee are Scott Barrett, Gordon Bodnar, David Calleo, Eliot Cohen, Charles Doran, Carmen Garcia Fernandez, Karl Jackson and Riordan Roett. Also serving will be H. Peyton Young, professor of economics in the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences, and Rosalie Parker, a first-year master's candidate at SAIS.
Nominations for the position can be sent to the provost at 265 Garland Hall, Homewood campus, or firstname.lastname@example.org.
