Become a Child Passenger Safety Expert -- Many of the injuries and fatalities of children in vehicle crashes--which in 1999 included more than 1,000 children under the age of 11 in Maryland alone--could have been prevented if the children had been correctly restrained. To help lower the numbers, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has developed a four-day course for child passenger safety certification, which will be taught from Oct. 9 to 12 on the JHMI campus. Those certified will be qualified to teach families how to select and correctly install car seats. A nominal fee of $10 is charged for the training, which is co-sponsored by the Central Maryland Safe Communities Center, the Children's Safety Center and the Center for Injury Research and Policy. To participate or for more information, call 410-614-5555.
