JHUniverse Update: Week 2 February 14, 1994 Computer users who have come to rely on Hopkins' Gopher -- the predecessor of JHUniverse -- to find specific information on the Internet should now be able to locate that information on JHUniverse. "When we switched from Gopher to the new system some things didn't make the transition," said Lee Watkins, assistant director of academic computing at Homewood. "For instance, Computational Biology, a program heavily used by School of Medicine researchers, was not initially transferred over." In the past week, technical support staff have completed transferring everything from the old system to the new one. Missing menu items were not the only stumbling blocks as JHUniverse entered its second week of service. "Last week we announced that initial problems experienced by modem users had been resolved, only to find they weren't," Watkins said. "Compounding the initial software glitch were some further problems with equipment. If you were unsuccessful using your modem before, try again." Users browsing through JHUniverse have noticed that it's not only menu items that are missing. Many menu selections in place do not yet have any information, although additional items are appearing every week. "This is what you'd call a 'soft' opening," said JHUniverse system manager Laura O'Callaghan. "We thought it was more important to get the system up and running and then flesh it out over time, rather than delay opening for a month or more while everything was brought online and put in place." Last week, the university calendar and the notices section of the Gazette came online. "I encourage our users to keep exploring as the system grows." JHUniverse users can call O'Callaghan at 410-516-8514 or contact her via email at LOC@jhunix.hcf.jhu.edu.
