A few comments about the identity The following is the university policy for the approved use of the logo and ID stationery. Under no circumstance is the logo to be altered in any way. The Johns Hopkins logotype consists of the words Johns Hopkins University. Versions are also available that substitute the word University with Engineering, Alumni, and Institutions. JHU Design and Publications has these prepared logotypes on file, and camera-ready artwork is available upon request. The identity colors are Reflex Blue and PMS 405 and will be referred to as blue and gray in this publication. The primary-unit designation is the name of the school, division, or office (e.g., School of Arts and Sciences, Department of the History of Art, or Office of the Provost). The typeface used for the primary unit is Helvetica Condensed Bold that has been machine condensed an additional 75 percent. The secondary-unit designation is the first line of the address block. It may be used for the school or department or it may be omitted. If omitted, the first line of the address would move up to that position. The typeface used for the secondary-unit is Helvetica Condensed. The tertiary-unit designation can be a department, office, center, or laboratory within a department. It is located below the address block, see examples on the following pages for the exact placement. The typeface is Helvetica Condensed Bold. The address block aligns with the primary unit and includes the room number and building name followed by the street address. A suite number follows the building name or street if the building is not named. Postal regulations stipulate that if the suite number is not on the same line as the building name it should appear on the line above the building name by itself. If two elements are on the same line they should be separated by a word space, a slash, and another word space. Directional streets are designated with N.W., etc. City and state, and nine-digit zip code are next. There should not be a comma between city and state. The state name is abbreviated to MD with no periods. The telephone number should be preceded by the area code and a hyphen and followed by a space, a slash, and a space, and then "Fax" and facsimile number. The electronic mail address is not preceded by the E-mail designation. The world wide web address is not preceded by the Internet designation or http://. Every effort has been made to establish a style that works the best in most cases and still satisfies the requirements specified by the post office. Please understand that in order to maintain a unified look for the university, it is not always possible to accommodate each person's individual requests. We continue to review the style and make adjustments as new situations arise such as the change in the name of a school or the addition of electronic information on business cards. If you encounter any problems while using the identity please call JHU Design & Publications at 410.516.7240.
