What’s Next?

By Kathy Schnurr,
Assistant Chaplain

We have been up to some really great stuff since our last publication– we published a Campus Ministries calendar, hosted 2 groups of incoming students for the Day of Service, and continued our regular community service projects of Sandwich Sundays for STAR and Ronald McDonald House BINGO. We had another hugely successful Open Your Eyes banquet that taught us “The Essence of Buddhism” and a group of students, including the Interfaith Council, went to hear E. L. Doctorow’s lecture “Religion and Literature”. Here’s what’s next: Planning for the 3rd Annual Open Hands Open Hearts: Religious Awareness Days is well under way. From Sunday, February 29th through Sunday, March 7th we will have a number of events highlighting the rich diversity of religious thought, belief and practice at Hopkins. Here is a sampling, so mark your calendars now and don’t miss these great opportunities:
6pm Sunday, February 29th Open Your Eyes – our kick-off event for OH OH will feature a collaboration between the Catholic Community and the Jewish Students Association.
7pm Monday, March 1st Dr. Charles Kimball “When Religion Becomes Evil” this not to be missed lecture will be held at the Interfaith Center. Dr. Kimball will address this timely topic – the subject of one of his recently published books. Included in the evening will be a book signing.
Tuesday evening, March 2nd IFC Game Show Night – last year’s game show “Celestial Jeopardy” was so popular we are doing another this year. Come by the Interfaith Center, laugh at some campus ministers and learn something new.
7pm Wednesday, March 3rd Book Discussion – in conjunction with the library’s diversity book group we will be looking at Dr. Diana Eck’s Encountering God.
Thursday evening, March 4th Coffee House – an opportunity to appreciate each other’s talents or share one of your own.
Saturday, March 6th Day of Service – offering a few chances to engage in one of the universal practices of all religious traditions – serving the needs of our community.

Our web site www.jhu.edu/~chaplain lists all of our activities and services as they are scheduled – check it often for up-to-date information.
Finally, we are planning the 5th Anniversary Celebration of the BuntinguMeyerhoff Interfaith and Community Service Center on Wednesday, April 28th. Please plan to join us as we celebrate the gift of this amazing space and all that it inspires and sustains. Ð
