A Real Eye Opener

Vol. II - Fall 2002 - Issue 1

I want to take this chance to highlight just a few of the great things that have been happening through Campus Ministries this semester and that you can look for in the future. It has been an amazing semester!

We had our eyes opened at the first Open Your Eyes dinner and presentation. Congratulations to the Catholic Community and the Muslim Students Association for coming together to provide a delicious home cooked meal and an interesting, educational presentation on the Muslim Holy Month of Ramadan. This labor of love was organized by the students as a way to promote the knowledge and understanding of others’ beliefs. There were approximately 120 people in attendance representing several different religious traditions. There will be other opportunities to Open Your Eyes next semester and we are looking forward to continuing to offer these events.

The Labyrinth - a walking meditation - has been available three times. It was out on September 11th all day in the Glass Pavilion and twice on Tuesday evenings in the Interfaith Center. We have had well over 100 walkers. We will continue to make the Labyrinth available occasional Tuesday evenings throughout the year and for special programs.

Sandwich Sundays continue this year: students come together one Sunday evening a month to make great sack lunches for the people who use the services of the drop-in center at HERO, a local service provider for people living with HIV disease. We have added another monthly community service activity to our schedule. One Monday evening a month a group of students goes to the Ronald McDonald House to lead the evening activity. We follow up with a time to reflect on our experience at a local coffee shop. If you are interested in participating in either of these activities please contact us and we will be glad to include you in the schedule.

Look for information about Open Hands Open Hearts - our 2nd annual week of celebrating religious diversity on campus. Planning is currently under-way for this series of events to take place February 23rd through March 4th.

A new website for Campus Ministries is underconstruction and we plan to have it up and running very soon. It will be both attractive and user-friendly.

Finally, we have a beautiful new brochure thanks to Doug Behr of JHU Design and Publications. Our brochure contains helpful information about the mission of JHU Campus Ministries, the Interfaith Council, the Bunting Meyerhoff Interfaith and Community Service Center and the Campus Ministries Advisory Board. Please stop by and pick up one up.  Ð
