What we can do for Peace

Acknowledging that among us there are a variety of perspectives with regard to the war in Iraq, still we often feel helpless or immobilized. Here are some things we can do for peace.

Pray daily, alone and with others.

Fast for peace according to ability. Give the money saved from skipped or limited meals to agencies working toward resolutions or supporting those in crisis

Educate yourselves about Iraq and the Arab world. Attend as many lectures and panels and teach-ins as you are able.

Use car pools and public transportation, aiming for one oil-less day a week.

Contact senators and representatives and communicate your concerns about the war.

Be honest about your own feelings about war, this war: anger, sadness, despair, confusion, helplessness, fear....

Love your enemies, pray for them. Visualize in your prayers all of God's children as one family.

Drop a note of forgiveness and understanding to an estranged family member or friend.

Remember Martin Luther King Jr.'s words: "returning violence for violence increases hate, adding a deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Hate cannot drive out hate. Only love can do that."

All the goodness we share, all the tender mercy, all the love that is given in large and small measure, counts. Take time to be thoughtful and careful and loving of those around you.

A Prayer for Peace...

All gracious God, kindle in the hearts of all people the true love of peace. Guide us in the paths of peace and justice. May those who take counsel for the nations of the earth be led by your wisdom. May we come to know the blessing of tranquility and compassion, honor and love. Amen.
