Title: "On The Simulation Of The Fish-Like Swimming Of
Linked Bodies"
Abstract
The motion of a fish swimming involves the interaction between a shape changing body and a fluid. A related problem is the motion of linked, rigid bodies moving in a fluid. In this talk I will discuss how the numerical method Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) can be used to simulate linked bodies where the angles between the bodies are specified functions of time and the boundaries have arbitrary complexity. I will show examples of the motion, the scaling relations for the speed and power, and how the results correspond to those of G.I. Taylor in his famous paper on the swimming of long narrow animals. Using SPH we can easily study linked bodies swimming through a surface or near constraining walls, or in a stratified fluid.
