Michael Mond, Ph.D.

 

Director

 Dr. Mond completed his Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee in 1975.  He served as Director of the Psychological Services Center at the University of Notre Dame and as the Director of the Counseling Center at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. In 1992 Dr. Mond was appointed Director of the Counseling Center at Johns Hopkins University. In all three Universities, Michael played a formative role in redesigning and expanding counseling services. At Hopkins this goal included obtaining APA accreditation for the Center's Pre-Doctoral Internship Program, which was achieved in 2004. 

Dr. Mond is licensed as a psychologist in Maryland, and is on the National Register for Health Services Providers in Psychology. He is on the Accrediting Board of the International Association of Counseling Services (IACS), and has served on the Board of Directors of the American Council on Alcoholism (ACA), and the American Association of Suicidology (AAS). He also serves on University task forces for issues relating to the management of suicidal and potentially violent students. In addition, Michael has special expertise in crisis intervention work.

Kristen Adashi, M. D. Consulting Psychiatrist

 

Dr. Adashi joined the Counseling Center in 2006 as a Consulting Psychiatrist. She graduated from Yale University and received her medical degree from the University of Maryland. Dr. Adashi completed her psychiatry training through the University of Maryland/Sheppard Pratt Hospital residency program where she served as Chief Resident during her final year of training. In addition to her work at the Counseling Center, she supervises residents in psychotherapy and is a Fellow at the Baltimore Washington Center for Psychoanalysis.

Barbara Baum, Ph.D.

Staff Psychologist,

Coordinator for Group Therapy and for Services to Graduate Students

 

Dr. Baum earned her doctorate in clinical psychology at The American University in Washington, D.C., in 1986, and interned at the George Washington University Medical Center . She is licensed as a psychologist in the State of Maryland , and is on the National Register for Health Service Providers in Psychology. She has worked in three university counseling centers including the University of Maryland Baltimore County , where she was Director of Training. She has had a private practice in psychotherapy since 1989 and has served four terms as President of the Baltimore Psychological Association.

Dr. Baum has been at Johns Hopkins since 1996. For 12 years she coordinated Counseling Center services to the School of Nursing , and she is now coordinator for group therapy services and services to graduate students. She has led a variety of groups at Hopkins , including Survivors of Sexual Abuse and Assault , Stress Management, Freshman Support, and the Dissertation Support Group . Major areas of clinical interest include coping with stress, survivors of sexual abuse and assault, and issues of grief and loss.

Larry David, Ph.D.

 

Associate Director for Clinical Services

 

Dr. David is a graduate of the University of Kansas in Counseling Psychology. In addition to being licensed as a psychologist in Maryland, he is on the National Register for Health Service Providers in Psychology. He is also certified as proficient in the treatment of substance abuse by the American Psychological Association College of Professional Psychology. Larry has worked for over 15 years in university counseling centers, and has been with Johns Hopkins since 1992. He is a Faculty Associate, teaching in the Department of Counseling and Human Services in the School of Professional Studies in Business and Education. Larry's primary professional interests are in psychotherapy, addictions and the training of professional psychologists.
 

Doug Fogel, Psy.D.

Staff Psychologist, Nursing School Coordinator

 

Dr. Fogel grew up in Cleveland, OH. He received his Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from Central Michigan University. He also acquired training from Counseling Centers at both Virginia Tech and the University of Delaware. While at these sites he was involved with Men's Groups and other Men's Issues areas as well as substance abuse risk and reduction programs. Dr. Fogel is licensed as a psychologist in Maryland, and is on the National Register for Health Service Providers in Psychology. He has been at the JHU Counseling Center since 2002.

 

Dr. Fogel's clinical interests include anxiety disorders and trauma-related work, depression, and Men's Issues. Dr. Fogel also has a strong interest in the recent development of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). 

Arthur Hildreth, M.D.

Consulting Psychiatrist

Dr. Hildreth has been at the Counseling Center since 1992.  A licensed psychiatrist in the State of Maryland for over 30 years, Dr. Hildreth is on the medical staff at Union Memorial Hospital and Instructor and Supervisor of Residents at Shepard Pratt Hospital.  In addition, Dr. Hildreth is an Instructor in Psychiatry at Johns Hopkins Hospital and a Professor of Psychology at the Johns Hopkins University.  Dr. Hildreth has written many articles for publication.  His specific interests include training issues and psychoanalysis.  He has three grown daughters and several grandchildren.  

Clare King, R.N., L.C.S.W.

 

Staff Social Worker, Peer Counselor Coordinator

 

Clare V. King, R.N., M.S.W., L.C.S.W., graduated from Duke University and Simmons College School of Social Work.  She worked for three years in the Department of Psychiatry at Johns Hopkins Hospital before coming to the University, and is currently an Instructor, part-time, in the Department of Psychiatry.  Clare has been on the staff of the Counseling Center since 1984, and for the past 20 years has focused much of her energy on developing and supervising the student Peer Counseling Program, A Place To Talk.  In addition to teaching a course on Listening Skills to prospective counselors, Clare serves as the group's professional consultant.  She also consults to the Sexual Assault Response Unit (SARU), an outgrowth of APTT.  She coordinates group programs for the Counseling Center and offers a workshop on Emotional Intelligence, a recent professional interest.
 

Garima Lamba, Ph.D.

 

Staff Psychologist, International/Asian American Students Coordinator

Dr. Lamba joined the counseling center staff in 2006 as a Staff Psychologist. She received her doctorate from the University of Memphis and finished her internship at University of Minnesota. She is licensed as a psychologist in Maryland. She worked at Texas Tech University’s counseling center for three years before joining the staff at JHU.

Garima coordinates counseling center services for international students and students from Asian American origin. Formerly an international student, she has strong interest (and experience) in working with international students along with other areas of interest like relationship issues, depression, anxiety, couples counseling, and training/supervision of new psychologists.  

Leon Levin, M.D.

Consulting Psychiatrist

Dr. Levin completed his psychiatric residency in Topeka, Kansas, where he graduated from the Menninger School of Psychiatry. He is also a graduate of the Baltimore/Washington Institute for Psychoanalysis. He has been in the private practice of psychiatry and psychoanalysis in Baltimore since 1963. At the same time he has been active in community psychiatry at Sinai Hospital and the University of Maryland, where he was associate clinical professor and director of outpatient services for the University of Maryland Carter Clinics. In addition to psychotherapy and social psychiatry, he has a special interest in using movies to educate the public about psychoanalysis. For over ten years he has been the director of the film series at the Baltimore Museum of Art, “Close-ups: Psychoanalysts Look at Films.”

Jennifer Moran, Psy.D. 

Staff Psychologist

 

Dr. Moran received her Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from the University of Denver. She has worked in a variety of outpatient settings throughout her career as a therapist, including two University Counseling Centers. Dr. Moran completed her Pre-Doctoral Internship at Suffolk University in Boston, MA. Dr. Moran is a Licensed Psychologist in the State of Maryland and is also a member of the National Register for Health Service Providers in Psychology.

Dr. Moran joined the Counseling Center staff in 2007 as a Staff Psychologist and Eating Disorder Programs Coordinator. She has worked within the field of eating disorders in various roles as an educator, therapist, consultant and supervisor since 1997. Locally, she has worked at the Center for Eating Disorders at Sheppard Pratt, as well as the Physicians Center for Weight Management and Eating Disorders. Dr. Moran specializes in using mindfulness techniques and cogntive behavioral therapy in her treatment approach. Besides eating disorders, Dr. Moran has an interest in providing supervision to new therapists, and in treating anxiety, depression, relationship issues and Women's issues.

Terrye Mowatt, M.D. 

Consulting Psychiatrist

 

Dr. Terrye Mowatt joined the Counseling Center staff in 2006 as a Consulting Psychiatrist. She received her MD degree from Howard University School of Medicine. She completed her psychiatric residency at Bethesda Naval Medical Center. Dr. Mowatt was an officer in the US Navy for six years, primarily stationed in Bethesda, Maryland. She has lived in the Baltimore-Washington area most of her life.

 

Paul Roberts, M.D.

 

Consulting Psychiatrist

 

Paul Roberts, M. D., joined the Staff in the Spring, 2007. He completed his psychiatry training at The Sheppard and Enoch Pratt Hospital, and is a graduate of The Baltimore Washington Institute for Psychoanalysis, where he continues to teach and to supervise psychoanalytic candidates. He also supervises psychiatric residents at The Johns Hopkins and University of Maryland training programs, and has been in the private practice of psychotherapy and psychoanalysis in Baltimore since 1966.

Vernon Savage, Ph.D.

 

Associate Director for Outreach and Consultation

Dr. Savage received his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. He is licensed as a psychologist in Maryland, and is on the National Register for Health Service Providers in Psychology. For over twenty years he has served as a psychologist, as well as in various administrative positions at Oberlin College, Swarthmore College and Towson University. He has been at the JHU Counseling Center since 1993. Dr. Savage is interested in managing and providing psychological services which maximize positive growth and change in individuals, organizations and communities. His interests also include working in arenas which provide opportunities to impact the lives of Blacks and other American minorities. As Director of Outreach for the Counseling Center, Dr. Savage coordinates interactions and cooperative efforts between the Counseling Center and other University Departments, and serves as a liaison between the center and the University community.  

Beth Silver, Psy.D. 

Staff Psychologist

 

Dr. Silver received her Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from the American School of Professional Psychology at Argosy University . She completed her postdoctoral fellowship at The Center for Eating Disorders at Sheppard Pratt Hospital and her predoctoral internship at John L. Gildner Regional Institute for Children and Adolescents.

Dr. Silver joined the staff of the Counseling Center in 2006. Her clinical interests include eating disorders, anxiety disorders, depression, and women's issues. Dr. Silver currently works two days per week at the Counseling Center.

 

Claude Smith, M.D.

 

Consulting Psychiatrist

 

Dr. Smith joined our staff in 1999 as a consulting Psychiatrist.  He received his M.D. degree from Tulane University School of Medicine, and served his psychiatric residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital.  He is Director of Inpatient Services at Union Memorial Hospital.  Dr. Smith was an officer in the US Navy, and spent two years as a Naval Undersea Medical Officer in Italy.  He speaks French, Portuguese and Italian.  

Matthew Torres, Ph.D.

Staff Psychologist, Training Director

 

 

Dr. Matt Torres received his doctorate in Counseling Psychology from the University of Pittsburgh. He is licensed as a psychologist in Maryland and DC, and he is on the National Register for Health Service Providers in Psychology. He has worked at university counseling centers since 1993. Before coming to Johns Hopkins, he was the Assistant Director for Clinical Services at the American University Counseling Center. His primary professional interests include individual and group psychotherapy, substance use and abuse, and training and supervision. Dr. Torres is the Training Director for the Counseling Center’s pre-doctoral psychology internship program.

 

Shelley Von Hagen-Jamar, Psy.D.

 

Staff Psychologist, Substance Abuse Coordinator

Dr. Von Hagen-Jamar joined the staff of the Counseling Center in September 2001. She received her doctorate in Clinical Psychology in December 2000 from the American School of Professional Psychology-Arlington campus, now known as Argosy University. She completed an internship at Howard University Hospital in Washington, D.C., and a postdoctoral fellowship in trauma disorders at Sheppard Pratt Hospital in Baltimore. In addition, she has a master’s degree in Counseling Psychology from the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota. Prior to returning to school for her doctorate, she worked for over ten years as a master’s level therapist in family service agencies, substance abuse treatment programs, and private practice. Dr. Von Hagen-Jamar is on the National Register for Health Services Providers in Psychology. She is also a Licensed Clinical Psychologist, a Licensed Clinical Alcohol and Drug Counselor, and a Certified Chemical Dependency Counselor. Her specialty areas include substance abuse, childhood sexual abuse, trauma disorders, and family and couples issues.
