Professional Attire

What should you wear for your interview? For a career fair? Different industries have different dress codes, but it is better to be safe than sorry. Avoid fashion trends; they may not be appropriate or recognized by your interviewer as fashionable. If you are dressed appropriately, recruiters and interviewers will not take much notice of your clothing.

Business Professional vs. Business Casual
There are two basic categories of professional dress: business and business casual. Business professional is the more formal of the two and most commonly worn in recruiting situations. When less formal attire is preferred, use the business casual guidelines.

Women’s Business Professional

  • A suit in a dark color like black, gray or navy. Solid or fine pinstripe. Skirt suits should be no shorter than two inches above the knee.
  • Blouse or dress shirt.
  • Mid-heel, closed-toe dress shoes and hose.
  • Minimal jewelry, perfume, and makeup.

Men’s Business Professional

  • A suit in a dark color like black, gray or navy. Solid or pinstripe.
  • Long-sleeve, button-down shirt and a tie.
  • Black or dark brown dress shoes with dark socks that complement your suit.
  • Minimal jewelry and cologne.
Example of Women's Business Professional

Women’s Business Casual

  • Skirt or pressed slacks.
  • Blouse or sweater.
  • Low-heeled professional shoes.
  • A jacket is optional.

Men’s Business Casual

  • Neat slacks or trousers.
  • Button-down, tucked-in shirt.
  • Professional shoes.
  • A jacket is optional.

On-Campus Recruiting Considerations
Business attire is always expected at on-campus interviews, information sessions, and career fairs. Occasionally, an employer will indicate that business casual is acceptable for an information session, but the Career Center recommends wearing a suit unless you are instructed otherwise. It is never appropriate to wear jeans, sandals, sweatshirts, t-shirts or sneakers to any recruiting event.
