International Students and Internships

As an international student, the internship search process is essentially the same for you as other students, but there are some extra steps the Career Center recommends to help you navigate this process. The most important thing to remember is that whether you wish to intern in the United States or abroad, the process takes time, so you will want to start early, approximately 6-12 months before you wish to intern.

  1. Schedule a meeting with an advisor in the Office of International Student and Scholar Services. Find out from your advisor what type of work authorization / experience is allowed on your visa.
You should also find out if the time you spend as an intern will take away from any time you are authorized to work after you complete your degree.

  2. After browsing through the links on the right side of this page, schedule an appointment to meet with a Career Center counselor to discuss your individual internship search strategy.

  3. You will find that research and networking skills will be a key part of your internship search. Most international Hopkins students find their internships through networking and applying directly to an employer. Review the Networking handout (pdf) for basic information on this process. If you have any questions, schedule an appointment with a career counselor.

  4. Many students find it helpful to target employers that have previously expressed an interest in hiring foreign workers. A very helpful website is available through the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL.) There you can download information to identify those employers using the H-1B Disclosure Data available through the DOL Foreign Labor Certification Data website. http://www.flcdatacenter.com/CaseData.aspx
